💭 FAQ 💭
This list is by no means complete. Edits will be made & additional questions could be added with time. I speak only for myself & never for my employers—past or present.
❥ Do you enjoy working in the games industry? —
I love it, but it has its respective stressors and limitations. I do my best every single day to make sure I don’t burn myself out—from streaming to writing personal projects to absorbing stories from other media— because I enjoy the ability to create for a living. I don't ever want to get tired of that.❥ How did you get into the video games industry? —
My experience getting into the industry was a mix of luck and hard work. Everyone's story is different, but if you want to hear mine you can listen to it HERE on TikTok. (Please Note: This video was recorded while I was still working for Bungie and my title was 'Associate Narrative Designer'.)❥ What does the hiring process look like for a writer in video games? —
One thing I will note about the industry is that every company does things differently--some only slightly different while others could be wildly different. From what I've seen a lot of the times companies will ask you to submit: cover letter, resume, & portfolio. Sometimes you might need one, sometimes you might need all 3. I can't tell you what recruiters are looking for, but in my opinion, it's always best to have all 3 up to date & ready to go.❥ You have a degree, do you recommend I go to school too? —
While I learned invaluable things during both of my degrees that have helped me in this industry, school is not everyone's path. If you feel like you don't have enough self discipline to learn about script writing, characters, etc. then I'd maybe consider it, but it's only one option.❥ Can you help me get a job in the industry? —
If only it were that easy! All the advice I've given people who ask for any usually revolves around this one simple principle: Just apply. The worst they can say is no/not right now. Work on your portfolio, your resume, your cover letters, etc. Keep bettering yourself and keep trying. I believe in you!❥ Do you have any resources that could help me get into game writing? —
In my opinion, one of the best resource lists I've seen was done by Ashley Poprik & I always recommend starting HERE if you're considering pursuing video game writing.❥ How do you feel about AI? —
Humanity is what makes art beautiful—writing, music, traditional or digital art, voice work, etc. Learning how to do these things & be creative is so important, but it takes time. I don't personally believe GenAI should be used in any of the fields listed nor any others that require human nuance just to cut back on things like budgets or any other resources. Please do not reach out to me about any writing positions that involve building or training your AI in any way.
